Issue 014

A note from Amanda

I don’t know what you are going through right now….but know this, you were never meant to carry the burden alone…Jesus gave the invitation to each one of us to ‘Cast our cares, our anxieties onto Him’. To let go and trust Him.

Know this, letting go and giving your worries over to the Lord isn't a sign of weakness; it is a powerful choice that you can make to trust that He is strong enough to carry it all and make a way, no matter what you are going through.

This week's scripture

“Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5: 6-7

This week's reflection

…cast all your care on Him for He cares for you…1 Peter 5:6-7

Cast your burden, your anxieties on the Lord and He shall sustain you. Psalm 55:22

The definition of to Cast in the above context, means to throw, hurl, toss, or forcefully let go of something with intent.

This doesn’t just mean put your cares to the side, it means to throw them onto Him, to let go of them completely.

In biblical times, when someone was travelling, they would lift their heavy sacks or bags off their shoulders and cast them onto the back of a donkey. The traveller was freed from carrying the burden even though the journey continued. The donkey was built to carry heavy burdens such as this.

Once that burden was placed on the donkeys back the traveller was able to let go. The donkey took over the responsibility of carrying the burden. This is how it is with our heavenly Father, as we cast our cares onto Him, He takes over.

The definition of ‘cares’ is equal to that of anxieties or worries.

The Greek meaning is ‘merimna’ which strangely enough means to divide or partition…so here it means a divided or fragmented state of mind.*

“When you are anxious your mind is divided. Part of you wants to trust God, part of you is afraid, part of you wants to control the outcomes and part of you knows you can’t. The anxiety literally fragments your mind. Your attention is divided.”* And you have no peace.

Multiple times in the Word it says NOT to worry or be anxious.

Luke 12:22 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.”

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

So how do we stop our anxious and worried thoughts?

2 Corinthians 10:5 uses the word casting again…”casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…”

Paul is saying:
- Destroy all false ideas, thoughts that go against God and His Word.
- When a wrong thought enters your mind, catch it, stop it, don’t just let it run free.
- Counteract it with His Word, replace the lie with His truth.
- If it comes back, stand again.

The best way to stand against worry is to keep the Word in your mouth and in your heart.
We need to learn to replace worry with the Word.

Joshua 1:8 says “…this Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night…”

Phil 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

This is where our mind needs to be.

In a previous newsletter, I asked What was your distraction? If the Word was our distraction, this means it would constantly be in our hearts and in our minds…because we are always in it.

This is where I want to be, so that every time a situation arises, I make a point of casting it over to over to Him and then be armed and ready to speak His Word when thoughts of worry come at me.

And remember, you cannot combat thoughts with thoughts, you combat thoughts with words, that means speaking it out loud.

Casting our cares is an act of faith, we are trusting that as we cast it onto him, which means we are letting go of whatever it is, that He will take care of it. We do this because we know Him, we know that He is working on our behalf.

And the Word actually says this “…because He cares for you.” The meaning of ‘cares’ here means that you matter to Him right now and He will work on your behalf as you cast your cares onto Him.

When we hand our worries over to Him, we are humbling ourselves and acknowledging that we need Him, we can’t do this on our own.

“Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”1 Peter 5:6-7

So, put the Word of God in first place, rather than what you think or see.

Cast all your cares, your worries and don’t take them back.

And when the enemy challenges you simply say, talk to God because He’s got this.

Verses to stand on this week

Cast your burden, your anxieties on the Lord and He shall sustain you. Psalm 55:22

“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6–7

“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. In God, I praise his Word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid.” Psalm 56:3–4

“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.” John 14:27

“Cast your burden on Yahweh and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.” Psalm 55:22

“But the Word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.” Deuteronomy 30:14

PRAYER

I cast my cares, my worries, my anxious thoughts onto You Lord, and I leave them with you, I will not take them back. Forgive me for being anxious and worried. Help me to keep my mind fixed on You and Your truth.

I replace every worry with Your Word, and I will speak your Word out loud until it silences the lies. I thank You that You love me and You are working on my behalf, right now. I will not be moved by my circumstances. Thank you that I can trust you and that you will never leave me nor forsake me. Thank you Father.

This week's step

Write down every worry or anxious thought on a page, then on another page, find a verse or verses that counter these thoughts. Then purposefully take a moment and cast every one of those thoughts that have been weighing you down - over to Him - see yourself throwing them away from you to the feet of Jesus.

Now place the verses that you wrote over your original page, paste it over it if you wish and every time you begin to have those anxious thoughts, go to those verses. Screenshot them if you need to so you have them on you phone throughout the day.
