Issue 019

A note from Amanda

Today I wanted to share a little about where one of my songs ‘God’s Property’ came from. It was actually one of my very first songs, although I've since revisited it, reworked the music, and given it a bit more of a rock sound! (See link to song below.)

As I was thinking about what to write for this week's reflection, this song came to mind.

I have an old book by Oral Roberts called “A Daily Guide to Miracles and Successful Living Through Seed-Faith.” It’s one of the oldies!

Now, you may or may not be a fan of Oral Roberts, and that's okay. I've always believed we can learn something from different people without necessarily agreeing with everything they say. As the saying goes, “Eat the soup and throw out the bones.” Take what is good and grounded in Scripture and leave the rest.

The very first reading in this book is called, “Devil, you can’t touch me, I am God’s property.” And the line that stood out to me the most was “I am God Bought, God Filled, and God Owned.”

I was facing a situation I had to place completely in God’s hands. I knew there would be a battle in my mind. That’s when these words became something I held onto, and I still do today.

This week's scripture

1 John 4:4
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.”

This week's reflection

God Bought, God Filled, and God Owned - I think sometimes, as Christians, we know these things in our heads, but do we really understand what they mean for us? Do we actually live each day knowing whose we are?

In 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 it says, “Or don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.”

Think about that for a moment.

God bought us. We were purchased with a price, and that price was the precious blood of Jesus. We have been redeemed through what He accomplished on the cross.

In Paul’s world, being “bought with a price” would have brought to mind the slave market, where someone was purchased and ownership changed hands. So Paul is saying, you are not your own; you are His. And being His is true freedom, because we have been bought out of slavery to sin, fear and the enemy’s lies.

God filled us. We are not left to face life on our own. The Holy Spirit dwells within us. God's presence isn't something we have to go searching for somewhere out there. His Spirit lives within us.

God owns us. 1 John 4:4 says “You are of God, little children…” We belong to Him. We are His children, and our identity is found in Christ. We are no longer defined by our past, our mistakes, our circumstances, or what other people say about us.

And I think this is something we really need to get hold of.

Because the enemy would love nothing more than for us to forget who we are.

Jesus tells us in John 10:10 that the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but He came so that we might have life, and have it more abundantly.

How often do we allow fear, doubt, condemnation, or discouragement to take hold of our thoughts? How often do we listen to those voices rather than what God has already said about us?

This is why knowing God's Word is so important. We need to know the truth so that we can recognise the lies.

Roberts writes about the fight we have with the enemy. He says "When you know you are God's property, it puts you in a take-charge position...You belong to God; therefore [you can] tell the devil to take his hands off God's property."

James 4:7 says: “Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Notice that it starts with submitting ourselves to God. We stand firm not because of our own strength, but because of who He is and what He has done for us. We submit our lives and our hearts to Him.

And 2 Corinthians 10:4 reminds us that the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but are powerful through God for pulling down strongholds.

We have been given spiritual weapons, but we need to learn to use them. We need to fill our hearts and minds with God's Word every day, believe what He says, and stand on His promises even when our circumstances seem to tell us something different.

I wonder how differently we would approach some of the battles in our lives if we truly understood who we are in Christ.

Would we be so quick to give in to fear, to allow discouragement in? Would we listen so readily to the lies that tell us we're not good enough, that we've failed, or that things will never change?

I'm not saying we won't face difficulties. Jesus never promised us a life without battles. But there is a difference between facing those battles in our own strength and facing them knowing that we belong to Him and that He has already won.

Knowing that we are God-bought, God-filled, and God-owned.

This is not just a nice statement to remember. It's a truth we can build our lives upon.

This is what inspired my song God’s Property. I wanted it to be more than just words set to music. I wanted it to be a declaration, a reminder of who we are in Christ and whose we are.

So perhaps that's something we can all reflect on this week.

Are we living in the truth of who God says we are, or are we allowing our circumstances, our past, or the enemy's lies to define us?

Because when we truly understand whose we are, it changes how we face what comes against us.

Verses to stand on this week

God bought
1 Peter 1: 18-19 “…knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things like silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ…”

Galatians 5:1 “Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

God filled
1 John 4:4 “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.”

Romans 8:15 “For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’”

God owned
Isaiah 43:1: “Don’t be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine.”

John 10:28: “I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

DECLARATION

I am God-bought.
I was purchased with the precious blood of Jesus.
I am not my own. I belong to Him.

I am God-filled.
The Holy Spirit lives in me.
I am never alone and I do not face life's battles in my own strength.

I am God-owned.
I am His child and my identity is found in Him.
I am not defined by my past, my mistakes, my circumstances,
or by what others say about me.

I submit myself to God.
I am God’s property, so enemy, take your hands off what belongs to God.
I resist you and you must flee.
I will not believe your lies. I stand on what God has said.

I know who I am and I know whose I am.
I choose to stand firm in God’s promises
and walk in the freedom and abundant life that Jesus has given me.

Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.
I am God-bought, God-filled, and God-owned,
and I will stand.
Amen.

One of my very first songs, now reworked with a rock sound. My prayer is that it becomes your declaration too: God-bought, God-filled, God-owned.

This week's step

This week, take some time to personalise this week’s verses by putting your own name or “I” and “me” into them. Then, each morning before you check your phone or start your day, read them aloud. Let the first words you hear be what God says about who you are and whose you are.

For example: “I am of God, and I have overcome, because greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

Seek Him first in all things and let your life shine His glory.
