Issue 002
Rest isn't the reward for finished work, it's where Jesus meets you in the middle of it.
A note from Amanda
Hey friend,
I've been thinking about how often I tell myself "I'll rest once everything's done," and how the list is never actually done. There's always one more thing. So rest keeps getting pushed to a day that never comes, and I end up running on empty and calling it faithfulness. If that sounds familiar, I think this week's word is for both of us.
This week's scripture
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
MATTHEW 11:28
This week's reflection
When's the last time you actually stopped? Not collapsed at the end of the day because your body gave you no choice, but stopped on purpose, in the middle of everything still undone, and just spent some time being with Him.
Most of us treat rest like a reward. We act like Jesus is standing at the finish line saying, "Come to Me, all you who have finished everything on your list." But that's not what He said. He said, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden." Not those that are finished everything and now you have time.
That's important, because it means rest was never meant to be something you qualify for. It's an invitation you can accept right where you are, mid-task, mid-mess, mid-week. Jesus isn't waiting for you to earn a break. He's offering you one right in the middle of your everything you are doing.
But here's what trips us up: we think resting means nothing gets done, and our list will just pile up more, so we have to keep going. But check this out… Rest, in His hands, isn't the absence of all responsibility. It's an exchange. You hand Him the version of this week that depends entirely on you, and you take up the version where He's carrying it with you. Now that's a completely different week.
And if we're honest, some of our exhaustion isn't really about how much we have to do. It's about how much we think depends on us alone. Somewhere along the way we started believing that if we slow down, everything falls apart - the house, the job, the people we love, maybe even our own sense of being needed. But God rested on the seventh day not because He was tired, but because the work was good and it could hold. He built rest into the rhythm of life before sin ever entered the picture. Rest isn't a loophole. It's part of the design. And it is important!
So this week, before you add one more thing to the list, try asking a different question: not "what do I still need to do," but "what am I carrying that He already offered to carry for me" Name it. Hand it over. Remember He said, Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
And in the midst of your busyness, make a point of stopping and handing it all over to Him, then let yourself actually stop, even for a few minutes and just sit with Him. Even better, book it into your calendar!
You will be amazed at how it changes your day.
Verses to stand on this week
Psalm 23:1-2 "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters."
Exodus 33:14 "And He said, 'My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.'"
Psalm 127:2 "It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep."
Hebrews 4:9-10 "There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His."
SPEAK THIS ALOUD
I come to Him today with what I'm carrying and I receive His rest as a gift, not a reward I have to earn. His presence goes with me and in His presence there is peace. I can lay everything down. I can stop. The world will not fall apart because I rested, because it was never mine to carry in the first place. I hand everything over to Him and I know He will lead me through my day and help me with every task.

THIS WEEK'S SONG
My Jesus
Seek First Worship
Behind the song: I have had some things happen lately in my life that I could not see how things would change…but they have, and it is only because of Gods goodness. I wrote this song because I just wanted to say Thankyou. Every day, I see His goodness. When I mess up He is still there and even in my frustrations He is patient. My hearts desire is to know Him more and to live a life that honours and serves Him.
This week's step
ONE SMALL THING
Pick one 15-minute window this week and put it on your calendar like an appointment you can't move - label it "Rest." When it comes, set your phone somewhere else, sit down, and read Matthew 11:28 slowly, twice. Then just stay there. No list, no scrolling, no multitasking. If your mind starts listing what you "should" be doing, picture handing each item to Jesus one at a time. That's the practice - not doing nothing, but handing it over.
